One thing that has always intrigued me, is trying to work out HOW a website was actually put together! This post outlines what I have gone through to get the technical side of this site “ready” for launch 🙂
Now, apart from preparing the content – bucketloads of it I have written over the years, and updated to be current as – the biggest issue I have had with the site has been working out the backend mechanics of it all!
OK – hosting is fine – I got that covered with a VPS machine of my own. No need to go searching for a new host, let alone a WordPress “specialist” LOL
CMS – well, it’s so easy to use WordPress these days, so why wouldn’t you 🙂
But here’s where the problems started!
I “discovered” the LMS plugins… or Learning Management System… and also some accompanying “premium” themes. And that is a rabbit hole I wish I NEVER went down!
So far I think I have wasted about three weeks of development time deciding what did NOT work (which was most of it) or simply did not suit what I had in mind.
Really? Yep! When you look at the demos for these things… it’s like “Wow!” They are pretty impressive 🙂 But as I should have realised, the bright shiny object I saw was merely an illusion.
So instead… I went back to basics. Kept it simple!
And I Wiped Everything!
Then did a normal fresh WordPress installation, with a basic free theme (OceanWP) and the free Elementor page-builder plugin (along with the regular SEO, security and backup plugins)
And then looked for an appropriate membership plugin to handle all the different levels, payments etc.
At the moment, I am currently tossing up between two membership plugins, and trying them both out to see which suits best. One is a totally free one, the other is very xxxy!
Guess which one seems to be winning? LOL
What amuses me is that I have education and teaching experience… and I have been doing this online stuff for 20+ years… and yet for the life of me, I couldn’t work out how to make modifications to that “premium” package to get it to do what I wanted! God help any DIY type person trying to do it! Destined for failure, and thanks for your money!
I was reminded, yet again, that WHEN (not if) you keep things simple, the answers are often staring you in the face!
It’s when all those impressive bells and whistles snag your attention, that you lose focus!
Remember that Grasshopper! 🙂
And this new disturbing trend I am noticing for “packages” or “solutions” to all of life’s little problems… yeah… nah! I don’t like it! The “package” I wasted so much time looking at was developed by programmers, and NOT by educators! Seems they tried to copy what another successful site was doing (Teachable) and then re-engineered the software, threw in some shiny objects, and TA DA! Nope… sorry. You missed the point LOL
As you’ll appreciate even more as you go through the YBI course… K.I.S.S. works even BETTER today in our fast moving society 🙂
